Creating and maintaining an artistic brand is all about shining a bright light into the world, to capture people’s attention, and draw them towards you. An artistic brand is like a lamppost, it stands tall and shines bright with your value.

What is an Artistic Brand?

Let’s start by defining brand. A brand is name, term, sign, symbol or design, or a combination of them intended to identify and differentiate an organization or person from others. Basically an artistic brand is what makes you special and unique.

Authenticity is key to a successful brand. If you are not authentic your brand will come across as false and people will dismiss it and you. Presenting your authentic brand covers everything from your tone, attitude, actions, decisions, and skills and abilities.

A great artistic brand delivers a clear, consistent and constant message. The message needs to be simple and short, something that people will easily understand. The message must be the same every time you share it. (Now a consistent brand will still evolve, and its okay to change your message if you change too.) And the message must be shared regularly, this is how brand awareness is developed and maintained.

Why an Artistic Brand?

There are several benefits to presenting a clear, consistent and constant message as your artistic brand:

Communicates Your Value: your brand is what makes you desirable, attractive and unique. It helps you stand out from the crowd, and gets you noticed.

Compass: having an artistic brand gives you a way to navigate forward, and helps you figure out where to focus your energies. We all get lost at times, not sure what action to take or what decision to make. When you get lost ask if the action or decision is in keeping with your brand.

Expert/Leader in Your Field/Organization: over time your artistic brand can develop a positive reputation that attracts great opportunities your way. When your name is associated with credibility and respect people will share your brand with others, increasing your visibility.

Four Ps

Presenting a clear message is the hardest part of creating an artistic brand. Let’s take a few minutes to discover what your artistic brand looks like.

An authentic brand shines a bright light into the world, helping people find you and learn about your worth. There are four Ps to discovering your authentic message: process, person, press and personal/professional (artistic) brand.

If you don’t know all the answers today, that’s okay. This is a starting point, an artistic brand is created over time, not in a day.

Process = Path to Success

A process is a series of steps taken to achieve success, steps that take you from a problem to a solution. They are the tricks and techniques you use to be an accomplished individual. When you face a problem how do you find a solution? How do you innovate success to be productive, creative and happy? Creative problem solving, appreciative inquiry and design thinking are only a few of the many processes that people use to be successful.

Person = Traits

What traits make you an artistic individual? What are your particular strengths, abilities and talents? Knowing what you are good at is a wonderful way to share your light with the world. We are all good at something, and that is a fantastic way to stand out.

Press = Environment

Press is all about the environment. How do you create an atmosphere of success? For yourself and for others. What do you need in your environment, physically and mentally, to accomplish goals? How do you support people to be productive, creative and happy? For example, perhaps you regularly express appreciation to let people know they are doing a good job.

Personal/Professional Artistic Brand Formula

Process + Person + Press = Personal/Professional (Artistic) Brand. Once you know yourself and what you are good at, you can craft an authentic artistic brand to present and deliver to the world. Now you can figure out the clear message you want to share to express your value.

Choose what options you want to focus on to present an artistic brand that delivers a clear message. For example, you may choose to focus on 2-3 words as your artistic brand, an image, or even some music.

Share Your Brand

Once you have an authentic message, your artistic brand, then you need to share it with others. Let’s take a look at some avenues for delivering your message.

Create/Maintain an Online Presence: we live in a digital world, and the internet is the place where many people find information today. That means you need to have a digital identity that delivers your artistic brand. This may include a website, social media, and online communities.

Community Involvement: meet people in your community. They are the closest to you, which makes it easy for them to connect with you. Volunteer with an organization that aligns with your brand, and attend events that will allow you to deliver your message.

Communicate Regularly: deliver and share your brand message constantly. The best way to get people to remember your artistic brand, is to share it repeatedly and regularly with others. This can be done with social media posts, a blog, or newsletter as some examples.

Connect With Emotion: mentor and inspire others by connecting with them on an emotional level. Human beings respond to positive emotions that lift them up and motivate them to achieve their full potential. Make people feel good and they will remember your artistic brand.

Enhancing Your Brand

Once you have a clear message as an artistic brand you need to take active steps to present and deliver it. Having a brand is not enough, you need to take action and reach out to people so they discover and appreciate your value. Let’s review some ways you can enhance your artistic brand:

Prove Your Worth: do a good job and make a positive impression so people mention and recommend you to others. Build your skills by acquiring abilities and knowledge that align with your brand to enhance your value.

Develop a Narrative: share your value added story with the world, people remember a good story and often share it with others. Word of mouth is one of the best tools to share your artistic brand and increase its visibility.

Introduce Yourself: define a target audience and connect with them online and in person. Give people a chance to learn about you and what you offer, and what makes you unique. Take the time to design a roadmap to success, a plan to share your artistic brand.
